Hey 85,

Welcome,

If you are trying to replace the plastic around the ring, it isn't replaceable.  You will need a new wheel or one from a wrecking yard.

If you are just trying to remove the trim, a firm tap from the back side should do it.  Some pics will help us understand what you are working on.

good luck

To remove the steering wheel, first remove the horn pad retaining screws from the backside of the wheel

Next, lift up and turn over the horn pad ...

then disconnect the horn pad electrical plug from the column

Loosen the steering wheel-to-shaft retaining bolt a couple of turns

then assemble a puller to the wheel and loosen the wheel from the shaft

Most parts stores will provide the puller for a refundable fee

Finally, remove the retaining bolt

Before pulling the wheel from the shaft, make a matchmark on the shaft and wheel

Finish by pulling the steering wheel from the column shaft

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the steering wheel hub cover by removing the screws from the spokes and lifting the steering wheel hub cover. On the deluxe wheel, pop the hub emblem off. On sport wheels, unscrew the hub emblem.
  2. Disconnect the horn switch wires by pulling the spoke terminal from the blade connectors. On vehicles equipped with speed control, squeeze or pinch the J clip ground wire terminal firmly and pull it out of the hole in the steering wheel. Do not pull the ground terminal out of the threaded hole without squeezing the terminal clip to relieve the spring retention of the terminal in the threaded hole.
  3. Remove the horn switch assembly and disconnect the horn and speed control wire, if equipped.
  4. Remove the steering wheel attaching nut.
  5. Using a steering wheel puller, remove the steering wheel from the upper steering shaft. Do not use a knock-off type steering wheel puller or strike the end of the steering column upper shaft with a hammer. This could cause damage to the steering shaft bearing.
To install:

  1. Position the steering wheel on the end of the steering wheel shaft. Align the mark and the flats on the steering wheel with the mark and the flats on the shaft, assuring that the straight ahead steering wheel position corresponds to the straight ahead position of the front wheels.
  2. Install the wheel nut. Tighten the nut to 30-1 ft. lbs.
  3. Install the horn switch assembly and connect the horn and speed control wire, if equipped.
  4. Install the cover or trim emblem.
  5. Check the steering column for proper operation.
