I have a 1971 Bronco Sport, Frame Up rebuild. It has the N.P. 435 transmission, 302 engine, 31" tires, 2 inch suspension lift, and a 1 inch body lift. I have installed a new wiring harness, (after nearly burning it down on my way up to the Mary Murphy Mine in Colorado. Then had to be towed back to camp by a J#@p!!!). I would like to install EFI. I bought a 1989 Crown Vic, (sister borrowed it for 7 years, still runs great, so I hear). It has a 5.0 speed density engine and learned that Ron Francis can make a wire harness for it, for about $550.00. I am not wanting a hot rod, or wanting to hop it up, I just want it to be reliable. Will the speed density work well at high altitude and sea level? Can I swap the EFI stuff from the Crown Vic engine on to my Bronco 302? Also, the car has an automatic transmission and the bronco is a standard. Will this cause a problem? Would like any and all advice and comments.

Hey Chip, Welcome.

If you're looking for reliability, make sure all the ancillary or support systems are in good order. The ignition system, the cooling system, the fuel delivery system.

You had a fire in your wiring harness? That wasn't from the intake right? Changing the intake/ fuel delivery system won't prevent another wiring fire. Being sure the new wiring is done correctly and with proper safeguards, such as fuses, breakers, and fusable links, is what will make it reliable.

What caused the fire? Find the origin and cure the problem.

Bottom line is I don't think all the work to convert to an EFI system is going to give you reliability, unless your problem is that the current fuel delivery system is breaking down.

Hi Chip.., welcome..!!

It seems I'm always the one who ends up playing "devils advocate" on these types of questions... >:) Thing is, I don't like the thought of folks thinking back & saying..., "sure wish someone had told me this..!"

The short answer is SURE.., it can be done. However, I cannot speak to how well it will work, or what expenses are involved.

I've always wondered why someone hasn't built a carb with mixture control, like we have in aircraft.

I would ask.., being in Colorado, wouldn't you have to drive hrs. & hrs. to get to sea level..?

As to reliability, there's good to be said about the "old school" systems (which the EB is). You can change out components on the trail., or, rig something up to get you home where a complete repair can be made.

As I see it.., when electronics fail.., you're done.., call the Jxxp dude..!

Have you talked to several 4x4 shops & clubs in the area to see what they do for altitude runn'n..? I would think smaller carb jetting would be the key as you're starting out above 5K ft. aren't you..?

Do let us know what you decide & how it works... >:D< <'>

OOPS.., just noticed Ron pretty much already said the same thing, except, as I read it, you already solved/replaced all the wiring.

Hey Chip,

I didn't realize that altitude was an issue. here's a link to a company that makes EFI bolt on systems that replace Your carb. They also have a control and display that allows you to adjust air/fuel mixture without a laptop. Do it all in the vehicle. This may be what you need to overcome your problem.

Good luck

Hey Guys,

To answer some questions for you. Yes, the fire problem was fixed with new wiring harness. The intake did not cause the fire, I found 11 places in the old wiring harness where the previous owner drilled through the bottom of the dash and into the wiring harness. Also, I live in Kansas, and the elevation here is approximately 1,300 Ft. It is a 12 hour drive to the cabin in Colorado, which the elevation there is approximately 8,000 Ft., and I usually drive up to approximately 12,000 Ft. I appreciate all the good advice, and at this point I think I will contact a Colorado 4x4 club and see what they are doing. Anyone know of one????? Thanks again to all for the great advice.

WOW...!

That is some variation..! What we did with the racecar was pop the airhorn off the carb & change jets depending on the altitude of the town. Took 'bout 30 min. & didn't cost much. (jar full-o-jets) .... :-"
