I've attached a photo of the steering box which came off my 76 Bronco. I know it's not original. I believe it's a Saginaw, but unsure what the casting numbers 22273 and 7813031 mean. It had been bolted to the outside of the frame, and required the removal of the left spring tower. I am wanting to return this to an original suspension, and get rid of the "custom leaf spring" front suspension. I wanted to move it to the original location but the bolt pattern is different, and I don't want to drill more holes in the frame. My thought is to swap this box for something which will bolt to the original location, so I can get the suspension back to somewhat original. Any suggestions? Is this box something which would have been more desirable for climbing? These guys did more "work" on this vehicle than anything I've seen.

Thanks

Without a better look at the box, it almost looks original. Original boxes (PS or manual) were all bolted to the outside of the frame. Can you get a picture of where this was mounted and indicate what holes were used to bolt it up to at?

I am not sure what those casting numbers are, is there an ID tag on it somewhere? Like on the aluminum plate on the top? Most casting numbers or ID numbers are a combination of letters and numbers. If it is off of say a 76 it would have like D6 on the beginning of the #.

Sorry you got an EB that someone worked over, especially if they swapped out the front coils for leaf springs.....that's a head scratcher there. You get a better ride and better suspension flex out of coils to begin with. Must have been owned by a GM or Chrystler builder who was completely unaccustomed to a vastly superior suspension.

But if you can get more pictures of both the box & frame, it can help a little bit more. Also check everywhere on the box for numbers.

The bolt patterns don't match up, unless I mount the box on the inside, which would then have the input shaft pointing to the front of the vehicle. There are no other numbers on the box, making it more difficult. I'll try and take some pics tonight of the original/relocated mounting holes. They built this thing for climbing the dunes on Padre Island, hence the felt the'd get more out of the leaf springs. That's my assumption anyway.

The number stamped on top of the box is 7812145. From everything I've been reading it looks like it came off a Government Motors vehicle, which is probably why the holes won't line up. Guess I may try to find something which was made to fit, and sell the box I have to one of my Bowtie buddies.

I think I'm going to fabricate an adapter plate similar to the one JBG sells for the Rock Crawler gear box. I should then be able to mount the box in the original position, and possibly only need a slightly longer steering shaft to make it work.

You're right. With a long magnet and a couple pieces of pipe I should be able to have all three holes supported. I'll just mount the plate first, and have holes pre-tapped for the new box.
