Does anyone know why my headlights turn off and on while I'm driving my 79 Bronco?

stop turning them on and off....
Sorry had to say that.. I would check your headlight switch and if that is ok, check the grounds. Does all of your lights turn on and off or just your headlights?

I've changed the main switch and the high/low beam switch. I never did get out of the truck to look if all the lights turned off, I just pull off the road and turn the switch on and off until they come back on. I was thinking it might be a relay that's over heating.....but I can not find any relays. It's winter here so I've parked the Bronco until summer, so I'm hoping someone else has had the same problem and can tell me what I need to do. Thanks

thanks, and good luck

If I had money I would buy an escalade lift it and beat it to death in mud holes and rock crawls. then show it off to the looser city kids who get them from their parents

i would check the dimmer switch(high low beam)again and the wiring in the plug for it. mine does the same thing once in a while. the next time they go out, wiggle the switch and the plug. those switches and plugs have to put up with alot of moisture, dirt, ect... the termanals get rusty being down there on the floor.

I have an 89 Honda Accord and when I turn off the car, the headlights
stay on. This problem happened at the same time that my dash stopped
lighting up and there is no dinging sound anymore that reminds me when
I leave the lights on. I checked the fuses and they are fine. Any
suggestions?

I have 2 Buick,s that had the lights go out --in the same curve --and I made it home and had to change the light switch. If the swich is good, the dimmer is good, the ground is clean and tight---you might want to check where the outside wireing harness goes together into the wireing harness inside the cab. The stuff the manufactureing companys put on the junction to keep out moisture---will sometimes get hot (dureing summer months ) and cause you to loose your connection. What we done was take the bolt out that holds the wireing together (on the firewall) and clean the connection out really good with gas or a good cleaner---now--make sure that it is completely dry------like in a day or so --before you connect it back up---AND MAKE SURE YOU TAKE THE BATTERY TERMINAL OFF--BETTER YET--TAKE THE BATTERY OUT ,SO NO ONE WILL PUT IT BACK ON ---TO AVOID A FIRE.

If you already replaced the switch(s) then it must be a wire or a fuse. I had a ford ranger that would lose the lights after a tiny bump and only tiny bumps. Ended up being an exposed wire that would rub a bolt and short out the lights. Just check the whole system and you'll find something.

Years ago my '79 would do this. Eventually it led to the headlights virtually exploding. The problem wa the ground between the engine, and body/frame was loose. When it would short the headlights would go out.

The next time just pull over and wait a few minutes and see if they coome back on by them selves without messing with the switch. If so, it is the circuit breaker that they use in the lighting circuit in place of a fuse. It is in the fuse panel and has a tin cover the same size as a fuse. I believe you should have a 30 amp circuit breaker in that position, but check the box cover for size. It could just be getting old and cranky.

Good luck,

:)>-

Hey as far as I know these years DONT have a breaker,My 74 and 76 truck and now my 78 bronco dont have these....This may sound stupid but I was having the same problem and went through 2 switches till I found the problem. It was something about the power wire ? for the radio runs through the headlamp switch.Could have been the dimmer circuit,But when I pulled radio fuse that wire went dead. And since I had an aftemarket and obviously more powerful radio than stock,,I was pulling more power through the switch and was burning them out.I eventuly ran another wire for power for just the radio. Its been 3 years now and not have had any problems.

The head light switch does go bad a lot and might only affect head lights but have to replace the whole assembly. Check your floor switch also. Just push it softly, if lights go to high beam or go out before you hear it click it is bad.
