what are the laws as far as bumper height and width? I see a lot of jeeps where the bumper barely comes across the frame rails... is it legal? also I hear that there is a height requirement from the bottom of the bumper to the ground. Does any body know? While I am on the topic of laws I might as well add headlight requirements, running lights, and fog lights to the mix... I hear that all aftermarket fog lights such as KC lights must have covers on them while on public highways. any information is helpful as it can keep us all from being nit picked. :)

its been awhile since i checked the lift laws in virgina but i think each state has different ride height requirements. in virginia, the height is measured from bottom of frame rail to ground. you have to check the laws in your state. some states require that any foglights above the headlights have to be covered. (found out during a traffic stop). hope this helps a little.

Yes, height and lighting laws will vary from state to state, so check with your DMV or inspection station for the regs.

ok, do that and print out what you need in case you run into some idiots like I have here in NJ where they have no *** clue as to the REAL LAWs.
For instance, someone at the BJ State's Contractor operated DMV Inspection Web Site added "Transmission Leaks" to the Failure listing; but it not listed anywhere in the DMV's Laws/rules...
Another joker told me he wouldn't let me into the Inspection Station unless I showed him "proof" that my 96 was Not Lifted beyond the max height for lighting/bumper...etc. It is not lifted... complaints to the DMV go unanswered. Only choice is to pay a local state cert. garage to inspect it every 2 yrs at $80.00
I give up.... no mods coming, ever...

Here in Texas, my experience has been mixed when it comes to the lift laws. I have a copy from the state of the regs on lifts, lighting, inspection, even window tint. Most problems come from the state troopers which have some discretion in interpreting the laws. A few have been really picky, but most will let you go when confronted by a written copy of the laws and the fact that you know them better than they do. I'm fortunate to have a inspection station that told me, "If I can climb into the driver's seat and drive it around the block, I'll pass it. But you do have to be selective i nthat regard, and hope they don't look under the hood. But I'm with Miesk5 in keeping my daily driver or work truck stock, and using my lifted Broncos for offroad-only, and trailering them to any events. JSM84

I'm a certified state inspector here in Killeen, Texas.
The law for Texas is a maximum of 56 inches from ground to headlights for lift... as long as there is NO RUBBING when in full wheel lock.
Some of the books don't have the "no rubbing part", but there are many options in the TAVIS inspection program to read through when inspecting a vehicle and it is in there.
Just today I had to fail a lifted F-250 for that reason.
They left and took it to the place that installed the lift and came back and said they had gotten it fixed... they just spaced out the front bumper and didn't fix the rub on the front leaf springs... so I had to fail them again. When I say "had" to I mean by state law, not to be an a$$hole.

There's nothing in our book that says the KC (or Hella or anything else like that) lights have to be covered.
As long as your running lights and high beams emit a WHITE ONLY light, you're good to go.

As far as I know, there is only one DOT approved blue headlamp bulb and for the life of me I can't remember who it is that manufactures them.

But your state laws might vary, but that's just something you can go by until you find out.

JSM... the state law is 56 inches... and don't let them BS you into thinking otherwise... They in fact, aren't allowed to interpret the TDOT laws.
That is only left up to TDOT its self and/or the people who inspected your vehicle. It's good that you know the regulations, I think more people should.
They'd have a better understanding of why they got passed/failed/harassed by the police.

It is for the most part left to the discretion of the state inspector if anything is borderline/passable.

I hope that helped some, DJ.

thanks you guys have been really helpful... I dont exceed any laws as I sit now. I will be making copies of laws that come in handy for the times I do get harrassed... As far as the blue lights, I believe it is the company that supplies BMW for their production cars. I am amazed at all the stuff I came across on the DMV website.

I have a freind that bought a F150 from a deale and it had brushguarde and tail light guardes on and they would not insp it Check your local laws and don't be suprised if next year the laws change again

Wow thats crazy, (the whole dmv thing) Canada is way more relaxed. Im not sure of the exact laws, mainly cause they dont inforce them, but there are tons of huge trucks here running around on 44's. I know the tire tread is supposed to be covered by the body panels but a couple friends have the whole tire outside of the body and never get bothered. Inspections are required but only from a Journeyman mechanic.

I visited Michigan last summer and made a left turn like we do in Florida. I had all kinds of nice people waving at me with one finger. Apparently they thought my truck was #1.
