I was wondering if anyone new how to take the little filter out of the air box to replace. I tried to just pull on it but it didn't wanna come out. Also if it's gunked up would that cause low oil pressure? I've tried to locate a new filter for that and I can't seem to find one anywhere...any ideas along that line...any input would help.

there should be a clip holding it in place on the outside of the airbox

hmm...didn't notice it (tho it was getting dark) i'll look again tomorrow. Would that by any chance lower the oil pressure?

no, low oil pressure is more of a sign of internal engine trouble. When was you last oil change? what kind of oil and weight? and what are you using for an oil filter

I just changed it sunday. Used 10w 30 with a fram tough guard filter. Engine seems to run fine...though lower oil pressure certainly doesn't sound good. It's not dangerously low but it's dropped enough to set off an alarm in my head.

fram is most likely your problem, how was the pressure before?

It was great right needle was right between the A and the L on the gauge...now i'm lucky if it gets to the N...and before when she fired up the needle jumped to the previous range...now when fired up it lazly slides up.

Fram filters are notorious for that. they filter too good. turf it and get a cheap one.

Alrighty will scrap and grab another probably tomorrow...i certainly hope it works too because first start of the day i hear her ticking for a few seconds and i certainly don't like that sound. So...would a bosch or K&N filter be better (only ones that come to mind)

Im 100 percent confident that will solve your problem but please post your result. your not alone

Ive never seen a K&N Oil filter so couldnt tell you on that. I use pennzoil or quaker oil filters usually

I don't want to change up subject at all and YES I am interested in this too!!! I am also using a Fram(not tough gaurd) PH8A and 10W-30 have since I baught my '93. Definitally NOT trying to arguing just want more knowlege. How does a from differ from say a pennsoil as filtering too good? Should I make the switch? And also I live in NC winters get pretty cold 30's-40's and summers pretty hot 80's-90's. My question is I've heard some say to use different wieghts in different temperatures or is this just something someone does that like a little change in their life? Also did you find a replacement for that little filter under the big filter? Mines real dirty and I'm sure my truck would like to breathe a bit better. haha

The fram causes problems because it filters too good, causing oil to use the byass. If your not experiencing problems I wouldnt bother changing the filter.

I do my oil chnges with STP brand filters. The local Autozone sells them for 3.49 and they do the job. As for oil I use MOPAR MaxPro. It's rebadged Mobil 1 synthetic for the Dodge dealer. I get cases (12QTS) for ten bucks, hard to beat that.

FORD recommends that you use the Motorcraft filter. Reason being they are designed to keep oil where it needs to be when the engine is off. Fords are known for their crappy oil pressure. The filter is designed to keep the oil from draining back out of the block.
Also, I am not sure about the oil weight in the Northern portion of the U.S. but we in the South usually run the 15w40, diesel oil, on motors with high milage. Unless you have owned the vehicle since new and know the maintenance that has been done.
Again, this is only what we are tought. Hope this helps. -- Vince

i have used purolators on all my fords for a long time with no pressure issues. Also if you look at the temp charts for oil weight, in your range 30-90 your 10w30 probably covers it all. On my motors over 200k i run straight 30w.

Very interesting article Meisk, I read the comparison but now my head hurts. Haha. Tons of info in there

Wow...lots of info...didn't know there was so much to oil filters. Anyway I found the air filter I was looking for (crankcase breather...) and I replaced the oil filter with a motorcraft one. It didn't really seem to help the pressure a whole lot but made some improvement. As for the air filter she seemed to idle a bit better (also a never ending battle it seems). Back to the pressure problem...pcv valve or hoses maybe?

If you have a problem with low oil pressure or noises, the first thing I'd do is hook up a mechanical oil pressure gauge. You cannot rely on the factory "NORMAL" gauge. If you suffer from low oil pressure, it's most likely due to worn main bearings or a dying oil pump. A clogged pick-up tube for the pump will also starve it to a quick death.

If you tried the cheaper oil filter and still have issues then you have bigger problems. Dont rely on the factory gauge get it tested with a mechanical gauge for an accurate reading

fords as we all know will handel low oil psi better than most other makes. 12-15 psi oil press will float the crank and provided there are no other obstructions (lifters, pushrods drain holes in the heads) low (not no) oil press can be delt with . I had a 78 351m with 200k miles on it before it lost all press then it got rebuilt. I put 80k on it before it went from 20psi to zero.
