My bronco has been sitting for most of the summer with occasional use on the weekends only. One weekend, I tried to start it and it just wouldn't fire. After a while I tested the spark, and there was none. The distributor and coil were only a few months old and have been working great. Since the problem started I have replaced the voltage regulator, ignition module and the starter, I have tested all of the wiring to the coil and made sure that power is getting to the ignition module. When I was testing voltage to the ignition module, I got 12V when the key was turned to "on", but when I started cranking, the voltage dropped to 0.4V, which is obviously not enough to make a spark. The only possible candidates left are a bad ignition switch, or some other system is tied into the ignition and is sucking all the voltage. Other than that I have no idea what the problem is and am running out of patience.

thanks

What ignition system do you have installed in it? Is it a Duraspark II? If that is the case then the pickup coil inside the distributor is bad. If it is a Duraspark II then I can upload you a diagram and troubleshooting procedure.

Good luck,

After more work, i still have not solved the problem. I had a few possible solutions, but none of them worked. I replaced the ignition switch too. Just this weekend, one of the wires popped out of the pigtail leading from the ignition module. I am getting a new pigtail and hoping that that was the problem. I had tested continuity in the wires before and it looked good, but old, corroded wires can be very flaky. Any more info would be greatly appreciated. thanks

she lives!!! turns out it was the pigtail leading from the ignition module to the coil. i had checked it before and it passed but i guess it disconnected when i plugged it back in. so thats $83 of replacing working components and an $8 fix, aint life grand.
